Chapter 14

Lukas

You know what’s worse than feeling like a fish out of water? Trying to navigate a library when you barely ever read anything that wasn’t on a screen. The smell of old books and the eerie silence of the place already had me on edge as I wandered through the labyrinth of shelves.

“Self-help… Classics… Mystery… Where the hell is the section I’m looking for?” I muttered under my breath.

I turned another corner and found myself in the children’s section. Great. Brightly colored book covers featuring animals and fairy tales stared back at me, and my frustration reached its zenith. This place was a damn maze.

“Lukas?” A voice broke through my irritation. I turned to see Antonia, a librarian, looking at me with surprise written all over her face. She was in her early forties, petite with wavy brown hair tied up away from her face. She had a kind, motherly aura about her, which was a sharp contrast to her actual role in the pack as the wife of one of the enforcers.

“Antonia,” I greeted, forcing a smile.

“What brings you here?” She glanced at the rows of children’s books behind me, her eyes twinkling. “Some light reading?”

I sighed. “Can we talk? Privately?”

She studied me for a moment, and then nodded. “Of course. Is this about pack business?”

I hesitated for a split second before lying. “Yeah. Pack business.”

“All right, follow me.”

We wound our way through the maze of books, past the teen section and computers, finally stopping in a small, private room at the back of the library.

“What’s so urgent?” Antonia asked as she closed the door behind us.

“What can you tell me about Soren Cross?” I cut right to the chase.

Her eyes widened for a moment, and then she burst out, “Don’t tell me you’re in love with him too!”

My face twisted in horror. “What? God, no. The opposite, actually. The guy seems off to me. I’m doing a bit of investigating.”

She relaxed, adjusting her ponytail. “Ah, I see. Stepping in for Dahlia’s sake, are you?”

“Yes, that’s exactly it,” I lied.

“I’ve told Dahlia that man is just using her. He’s been poking around, asking too many questions. And now, he’s trying to get into the archive room.”

“The archive room?”

“Yes,” she continued. “We have to go through special procedures to allow access to that room for outsiders like Mr. Cross. It contains some pretty personal identifying documents of the supernaturals in town—particularly the long-lived ones from famous bloodlines. There are blueprints, news articles, and other things in there as well. It usually takes months to get a permit to access it, and Dahlia knows this.”

My mind started racing. Harper came from a famous bloodline—the Silvermists. Her Gram’s family had been a long line of powerful witches here since the town was founded. Was Soren after that information?

“Mr. Cross is trying to expedite the process,” Antonia went on. “I don’t know what his angle is, but it’s highly suspicious.”

“Can’t you do something to stop him?” I asked, feeling a knot tighten in my stomach.
